Cold stamping in UV-Offset

First, the UV glue is applied onto the substrate. Then, the cold stamping foil is laminated onto the varnish before curing. The curing of the varnish is effected through the base foil by means of a UV lamp. Finally, the base foil is removed from the substrate. The following schema illustrates the processing principle of cold stamping.
The appropriate cold stamping foil should be chosen with prior consultation of the foil supplier. An optimum result can be reached with stamping foils which can be removed easily. Other stamping foils which can not be removed easily produce a more accurate stamping, but increase the risk of incomplete transfers.
Depending on the substrate, 3-7 g/m² should be applied. When using very absorbent paper types, a primer should be printed before applying the UV glue.
The stamping speed depends upon the lamp capacity. In case of lamp capacities of 120-200 W/cm, stamping speeds of 40-80 m/min can be reached.
To avoid fold formation, the distances between the application unit, stamping unit, UV lamp and foil removal should be as short as possible. The angle of removal of the base foil infl uences the stamping result. Better results can be reached in case of fl at angles (better than steep angles).
Product should be stored cool and dry in a dark place. Shelf life in unopened tins is 6 months.

J+S UV LMI products are recommended for the production of food- and pharmaceutical packaging. The products indicated are formulated in such a way as to minimise potential migration through the substrate or the set-off from the printed outer side to the food contact surface in the stack or the reel, having taken into account the purpose for which they have been designed. Note that set-off and migration are also dependent on the processing conditions and suffi cient barrier properties of the substrate. The formulation considers low odour and low migration. The inks are only suitable for indirect food contact.
The inks are generally suitable for the packagings for following food:
• All kind of odour and taste sensitive food
• Solid, paste like or liquid, greasy or aqueous food
J+S UV LMI products are not permitted for direct food contact. Furthermore the application for food packaging which is determined for microwave or baking oven is only admitted, if special appraisals for this application are available.
J+S UV LMI products are suitable for many various substrates. However, because of the variety of substrates own pre-tests especially regarding adhesion are necessary. If necessary the substrate should be pre-treated. In order to evaluate the migration barrier of the substrates please contact your supplier.
Production and composition
The products listed above are manufactured in accordance with the EuPIA „Good Manufacturing Practices for the Production of Packaging Inks formulated for use on the non-food contact surfaces of food packaging and articles intended to come into contact with food (GMP)”. Inks and varnishes are formulated with polymere photoinitators and/or initiators with low migration potential. Raw materials like fast curing binders are used which are almost completely included in the ink layer after curing.
Compliance with regulations
The manufacturer of the complete end-product and the packer are legally responsible for the appropriateness of the food packaging for its use in accordance with the regulations.
Depending on the ink application we recommend curing with a radiant engergy of at least 25 mJ/cm² in order to achieve a completely cured ink layer. We recommend and ink application of 1,0 – 1,5 g/m².
For using in coating units we recommend a application of 2 - 6 g/m². The cell volume depends on the geometry, desired gloss and machine speed. The amount of the varnish should not exceed 6 g/m.
Overprint varnishes for using in ink units, we recommend our application instructions for „Inks“.
Because of the resistances of the inks they can be UVvarnished. Furthermore they can be laminated and printed by thermo transfer.
We recommend an inspection of the fi nished food packaging by an approved institute and we point out that not only the applied material but also the fabrication process can have an infl uence on the conformity of a packaging.
